100 Everyday Cathedrals: Day 59 – Fear

We live in a culture of fear. It’s everywhere. It’s in our politics when one politician tries to make us believe that a vote for their opponent will bring civilization to a crippling halt. It shows up in the TV commercials that try to convince us to invest in gold because it’s the only currency that won’t lose value(which if we ever get to that point I have a feeling we’ll have much worse things to worry about). It even shows up in the small things like buying phone cases for our phones so they won’t break in case we drop them.

If it’s true that sex sells, then fear sells so much more.

A couple days ago Kara and I were buying plane tickets and right before the purchase was finalized we were asked if we wanted to insure our tickets, you know “just in case the unexpected” happened. Here’s the thing, if something happened that was so unexpected that it kept us from traveling, then I’m pretty sure the trip would be the last thing we would worry about. Life is filled with unexpected things. The people who live well are not focused on the fear of unexpected things happenings. Living in fear is no way to live. What if instead of thinking of the worst case scenario we focused instead on the best case scenario. And when the bad things happen, we can chalk those up as exceptions to the rule.

I am reminded of the prophetic words of Jesus when he said, “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you…Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14v27)
